Abstract

Purpose : The primary aim of this survey was to expand the number of school dental hygiene centers and to encourage parents to have more understanding on the issue.

Methods : This study was conducted in 3 elementary schools in Gwacheon. One of the three schools has a school dental hygiene care center and the others do not. 782 parents from two classes of each grade answered the questionnaires.

Result : According to the survey, although parents are aware that there is a dental hygiene center at their children¡¯s school but they hardly know what kind of role the center does and what exactly it is. Parents from school which has a dental hygiene center express that a dental hygiene center is necessary for oral health care of children(4.47). On the other hand, the other two groups of parents from school which do not have dental hygiene centers yet shows high expectancy of the good results which the centers can bring(4.12). Both parents from school which has a dental hygiene center and parents from school which do not have one shows that a dental hygiene center is essential for children¡¯s dental health care. Also, there is close relation among the needs for the dental hygiene center, the expectancy of the results from dental hygiene center and satisfaction of parents.

Conclusion : Operating dental hygiene centers at schools will enable them to have significant differences from others. Therefore, it is required for schools to collaborate with a regional public health center and educational authorities. Moreover, improvement on operating systems, financial assistance and professional resources must be accompanied.
